Gacha in Second Life

Most Second Life residents have heard the word Gacha, but some are still not sure what it is. Since I’m a fan, I thought I’d explain things to the uninitiated. I admit it. I take pleasure in shopping Gacha markets. I like whimsical and quirky things, and Gacha has loads of that. For those who prefer more traditional items like hair, skin, and clothing, though, you can find that too. How Gacha came to be: In Japan people

Turning Lag Into Something Positive

I have a friend who felt inspired to write. She had no access to a computer at the time, but was so determined, she used her mobile phone to write long, extensive articles. I can’t imagine writing articles, let alone a book, using a phone, but she was even going to try that! In spite of having more lag than most of my friends and probably more than most people in

Second Life Goes Psychedelic

Last night I logged in to find everything had become psychedelic. A giant green prim covered most of the pub, and the Greedy gaming table looked like an overzealous hippie did a paint job on it. In spite of what you see here, it’s supposed to be plain wood, not tie dye. Apparently I was the only one to see all this. Rebaking textures, clearing cache, relogging, rebooting, lowering draw distance and

Other Cultures in Second Life

The internet and virtual worlds have brought the people of planet earth a whole lot closer. As a child, I never dreamed I’d be sitting in a virtual reality with people from other continents – but that has become the norm. I find it interesting that nationality can play a part in how we relate to each other, but not as much as character, personal interests, taste, and the type

Object Permissions Explained

Every object in Second Life is set with what is called “permissions” by the creator. These permissions determine what you can and cannot do with that item. To see what an object’s permissions are, right click it and choose “edit” on the pie menu. At the bottom of the window there is Modify, Copy, and Transfer, each with check boxes beside them. The checks in these boxes tell you what the permissions are.

New Prizes at Subculture

I have added new prizes into the Fnordian Fruity Fortunes machine. There’s now more dresses to win. All Subculture items are transferable, so if you get a duplicate prize or something you can’t use, feel free to pass it to a friend. I’ve set a couple of new mesh dresses for sale as well. They’re 199L each and come with go go boots. The dress to the left is called “Planet Blue.”

Light Your Face, Not The Room

How old is your facelight? Has anyone ever talked about how bright you are, and they’re not talking about your intelligence? Have you heard rumours that rooms become darker when you leave them? If so, you may want to ditch your facelight. For various reasons, some people won’t wear facelights at all; but for those of us who still want a little something, there’s actually a compromise between lighting an entire room and

Why I Prefer to Shop Inworld

Do you shop the Second Life Marketplace? Most of us do. It’s convenient and just by typing in the name of an item we can usually find what we want. We can see search results based on relevance, price, prim count, user rating, or even how new something is. There’s no denying that it’s useful, good for reference, and it makes things easier if we want something quickly. And yet I prefer to buy

Multiple IMs

Have you ever heard someone complain about being in “IM hell” and think they’re really boasting about how popular they are? I admit it. When people whinge about such things I usually think “Boo hoo. You have so many friends. What a terrible life!” To be clear that’s not what I’m doing now when I say that last night I was in IM hell. Such a thing is unusual for me. In general

Mesh Flowers and Mesh Plants

MystiTool Hud

When I was a newbie it took a while to save up to buy my first Second Life gadget. When I finally did, I got hold of something called MystiTool. This multi-purpose HUD changed my Second Life and let me see and do things inworld that I couldn’t with my regular viewer. There may be better tools available these days, and I’m aware that some SL viewers do things you could only do with

Miscommunication in a Virtual World

Though we have bodies, movement, and ways to express ourselves in Second Life, it’s still possible for misunderstandings to occur. If you look at my avatar, I seem to have it all together. I use a fairly dignified AO, and am usually dressed all right. In real life, however, I could be crying or running from room to room. I could be standing on my head and singing Battle Hymn of
