Second Life is a Virtual World, Not a Game

Recently, I brought up a controversial topic, though at the time I didn’t realize how controversial it was.

The gist of it: I said Second Life is not a game. It’s a place you may find games or play them when you’re logged into it, but the world itself is not the game.

That’s it!

Based on the furious responses, you’d have thought I brought up politics.

This isn’t just my opinion. The creators of Second Life say it’s not a game.

“Second Life is an online multimedia platform that allows people to create an avatar for themselves and have a second life in an online virtual world… In many ways, Second Life is similar to massively multiplayer online role-playing games; nevertheless, Linden Lab is emphatic that their creation is not a game: ‘There is no manufactured conflict, no set objective‘” – WIKIPEDIA

What SL is: A virtual world. It can be used for fun, education, artistic expression, or communication with friends. There’s really no limit.

  1. I have to agree. All the people with “SL is just a game” in their profiles makes me laugh. Because if SL is a game then so is IMVU and other platforms similar. Which each has a different description for sure. I always referred to SL and other Virtual worlds as 3 D chat worlds. A Game has an NPC(non player character) that we would interact with to gain a task to earn some cash and a object in most cases. And yeah we don’t gain lvls aside from the lvls of sarcasm and knowledge of people, creating, how second life works and also the knowledge we gain on how to hurt others or to get through hurt that has been done to us. So really in reality it is more then a game, It’s a platform of endless learning no matter the situation.
