May 1 marks the start of the Forget ME Not Charity event in Second Life, created by Adelia Aldenholt-Meli (QueenAdelia), to raise awareness about Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, also known as chronic fatigue syndrome or ME/CFS, which Adelia herself is affected by.
According to Adelia, studies have shown that ME has the lowest quality of life scores when compared with other serious diseases, such as cancer, MS, stroke, and more. “We need a lot more awareness about this condition because not only do patients suffer a great deal from their symptoms, but we also have to constantly fight to even be believed,” she said.
Adelia points out that a lot of stigma surrounds the disease, likening it to the days when people didn’t know what MS or Fibromyalgia was, so they psychologized it and called it hysteria. “The same thing is now happening with ME. It’s really important to end these misconceptions as they are hindering patients from getting help, and it’s also hindering essential research into physical dysfunction.”
Adelia would like to see more awareness about ME as a whole but says that unfortunately, it is usually ME patients themselves who have to raise awareness. “It’s very hard to do that with such limiting symptoms,” she said. “That’s why I’m very grateful to you for wanting to share this. Thankfully, Second Life allows me to do a little bit more than I’d be able to in real life. I could never go out on the streets to raise awareness; I’m far too sick and disabled for that. So I’m trying it this way instead.”
